How can mindfulness support children and young people?

Mindfulness can help children to achieve their potential and to flourish. Mindfulness practice can anchor children and help them feel grounded, safe and free to choose how they respond to a situation.  

  • Well-being and mental health - as well as helping them to recognise worry, manage difficulties and cope with exams, developing a more mindful awareness also helps children and young people to appreciate what is going well and to flourish.
  • Concentration and cognition - mindfulness trains us to understand and direct our attention with greater awareness and skill. This may improve the capacity of children to concentrate and be less distracted, as well as their working memory and ability to plan.
  • Social and emotional learning - mindfulness is often taught in the context of PSHE. It helps to develop a greater awareness of relationships and how to manage them (including difficult ones at home), as well as offering a richer understanding of things like self-esteem and optimism.
  • Behaviour - mindfulness may help the young to self-regulate more effectively, manage impulsivity and reduce conflict and oppositional behaviour. It should not, however, be used as a disciplinary tool

The Mental Health Foundation - A selection of Mental Health Foundation materials, including some great social media graphics to raise awareness and show support online.

Random Acts of Kindness - A fun site focussing on positive action and experience. All sorts here from virtual tours of the world’s greatest museums, to energetic challenges focussing on this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week topic - Kindness.

Positive Psychology - A whole host of activities for all ages, some fun games and conversation starters all centred around being kind.

Mental Health and Well-being

Nurseries, childminders, schools and colleges will understand that some children and young people may be experiencing feelings such as anxiety, stress or low mood when returning to school.

There are online resources available to help you and your child with mental health, including:

  • MindEd, a free educational resource from Health Education England on children and young people’s mental health
  • Rise Above, which aims to build resilience and support good mental health in young people aged 10 to 16
  • Every Mind Matters, which includes an online tool and email journey to support everyone to feel more confident in taking action to look after their mental health and wellbeing
  • Bereavement UK and the Childhood Bereavement Network, provide information and resources to support bereaved pupils, schools and staff
  • Kooth - Site for parents who are struggling with their children who are suffering from anxiety or are concerned about their children's mental health.
  • Kooth  - Site for children to visit if they feel they need further support for anxiety or their mental health. 

Barnardo’s See, Hear, Respond service, provides support to children, young people and their families who aren’t currently seeing a social worker or other agency, and who are struggling to cope. You can access via the ‘See, Hear, Respond’ service self-referral webpage or Freephone 0800 151 7015.

It is also vital to report any safeguarding concerns you have about any child. Contact the NSPCC helpline
