Curriculum

Year One

Spring Term

This term our topic is ''Water, water!'

We will be learning about the local history of the Albert Dock and how it has changed over time. We will learn about Jesse Hartley who was the Chief Engineer of the Albert Dock's original construction. We will also be learning about real pirate ships and the adventures we went on. We will learn about Captain Blackbeard who was a real pirate form England.

In Science, we will be learning about materials. We will be thinking about what different materials things are made from and why. Can you explain why Lego is made from plastic and not chocolate?  We will also use adjectives to describe the properties of materials and take part in a range of experiments!

We are having a big focus on our reading this term.  We will take part in daily Read, Write, Inc lessons to help us improve our reading, focussing on accurately decoding words. We will be reading sentences of increasing length and talking about what we have read.

What is your favourite story?

For Mathematics this term we will be developing our measuring and place value skills. We will consolidate our understanding of number bonds and number facts through problem solving and investigations.

In our R.E lessons, we will begin with why Jesus is such a special person. We will think about the qualities of a good friend and how important they can be. Giving thanks for our friendships, and understanding the importance of forgiveness will be also explored.

Next, we will focus on the Creation story and will have a go at being creators ourselves. We will also be learning about Easter and why we celebrate Easter.

In Art and Design, we will be learning the skill of weaving and using different materials to create an interesting collage. Our study will also focus on the life and works of Claude Monet and exploring the patterns, colours and methods he used in his artwork. We will also be creating our own artwork inspired by Monet using different techniques.
