Maths

At St.Oswald's CE Primary School we aim to ensure that pupils become confident and inquisitive mathematicians. We place a large emphasis upon number skills to ensure that pupils are able to add, subtract, multiply and divide using mental and written methods.

Pupils are also encouraged to learn their multiplication and division facts. Each child has a multiplication card from Year 2 onwards.  They will be awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold for their knowledge and understanding in their timestables.

All children should know rapid recall of multiplication and division facts up to 12 x 12 by Year 4, the national tests for this were planned to be introduced in the summer term of 2020.

Alongside this, we develop pupils' mathematical thinking, reasoning and problem solving skills.

We support children in their learning by providing them with opportunities to:

  • use concrete objects and/or act out an idea or skill
  • use visual, pictorial representations e.g. bar models to represent problems
  • use abstract representation - the symbolic stage where there is an understanding of formal methods

Resources we use for Maths:

  • Assertive Mentoring Maths Assessments
  • White Rose Maths Hub
  • NCTM (for children working at Greater Depth)
  • Nrich maths
  • IXL - Each child has their own log in for regular practise and there is guidance for how to complete the calculations for each activity.  This resource will help both parents and children, particulary when completing homework.
  • TT Rockstars - (Times Tables Rock Stars) is an online programme, pupils in Year 2 upwards all have log in details.  This programme is a fun for daily times tables practise which has very successfully boosted times tables recall speed for lots of our pupils.
  • Purple Mash- This programme contrains lot's of fun, educational activities for all ages.

Children have been given individual log ins for TT Rockstars, Purple Mash and IXL to use at home to support learning. If you are unsure of your child's log in please inform you child's class teacher whio will happily provide this for you.

Curriculum Development Opportunities

Maths Challenges are where our pupils get to compete with pupils from other schools demonstrating their mathematical abilities.  The challenges this year have been for pupils in years 5 and 6.

The Challenges have been hosted by Litherland High School and Marricourt High school.

Debt Aware - A voluntary organisation that have worked in upper Key Stage 2, the aims being that the children understand about the role money plays in thier own and others lives, including how to manage their money and about being a critical consumer. They develop an initial understanding about the concepts about interest, loan, debt and tax.

Interventions and Maths Support

Support in Earl;y - Additional TA support using Numicon.

Key Stage 1 -  Targetd Maths support at lunchtimes & Purple Mash.

Key Stage 2 - TT rock stars, Purple Mash & IXL used as interventions and support pre-school, break times and lunchtime.
