Key Information
The school takes its name from the Parish Church in Netherton and is named after Saint Oswald. He was a Christian king in Saxon times. Oswald became King of Northumbria in the year 632 AD and was later killed in battle. He is remembered because he invited Aidan to lead a group of missionaries to convert people to Christ. Our school badge shows the crown of King Oswald and the cross of Jesus. The present building was a Church of England Junior School and was opened by the Countess of Derby on 21st October 1959.
In 1979 the junior school amalgamated with the county infants school and became St. Oswald’s Church of England Aided Primary School.
In January 2001, a new community suite was opened by the Bishop of Liverpool the Rt. Reverend James Jones. In June 2003 he was back with us to open a new purpose built Nursery on the school campus.
A further extension was added during the Summer of 2005 when a Family room was built and this also provides facilities for parents’ courses and visits from other agencies.
The school celebrated its 50th Birthday on 21st October 2009.
In October 2009 the school was lucky to receive permission for a Primary Capital building project. In October 2010, St Oswald's CE Primary School's building work was completed. The builidng was officially opened by the Worshipful the Mayor Cllr. Mrs Maureen Fearn and Bishop Richard Blackburn. All classrooms are much bigger and have up to date facilities.
In 2010 the ICT facilities in the school have also been updated and now includes Apple Macs for the children to use.
